COURSE DESCRIPTION for Session 27 of The Practical Lawyer

A Practice Management Series for Solo and Small Law Firm Owners

2 General, 1.8 Ethics CLE Credits Approved

In these days of increasing access to and use of artificial intelligence as a research and document drafting tool, comprehensive knowledge of the advantages and risks of integrating use of artificial intelligence (AI) into the practice of law has become critical information for law firm owners.

-- Featuring Hilary Gerzhoy, a member of the ABA’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics, the Chair of the District of Columbia Bar Association’s Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee, and an adjunct legal ethics professor at Georgetown University Law: Ms. Gerzhoy will address both beneficial and harmful uses of AI by legal professionals with the goal of imparting a comprehensive understanding of how attorneys are using and will use AI.

Mindful of the risks that can arise from utilizing AI, Ms. Gerzhoy will provide attendees guidance on building a law firm legal ethics compliance plan, specifically highlighting how Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct necessarily impact and shape the use of AI by legal professionals. Any law firm engaging with AI must conscientiously and consistently adhere to the ever-existent obligations of attorney competence (CRPC Rule 1.1); confidentiality of client matters (CRPC Rule 1.6); supervision of attorneys and other legal staff (CRPC Rules 5.3 and 5.1); client disclosure (CRPC Rule 1.4); candor and honesty (CRPC Rules 3.3 and 8.4); and document preservation (CRPC Rule 1.15A).

OUR SPEAKER:

Hilary Gerzhoy is Vice Chair of HWG LLP’s nationally-recognized legal ethics and malpractice group. She serves as outside general counsel to law firms across the country, providing guidance on all aspects relating to the practice of law including risk management, conflicts, and disqualification issues.  She represents lawyers and firms in malpractice and fee disputes and disciplinary investigations, and serves as a legal ethics expert.  Hilary Gerzhoy is the Chair of the District of Columbia Bar Association’s Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee, a member of the ABA’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics, and an adjunct law professor at Georgetown where she teaches legal ethics.

This program is part of The Practical Lawyer Practice Management CLE series for Solo & Small Law Firm Owners & Attorneys specially developed by Colorado W.O.L.F. and co-sponsored by the Solo Small Firm Practice Section, Colorado Bar Association. Through the financial backing of the SSF Section, webinar and home study access are offered free to all SSF Section members. Section funding is provided on a course by course basis.
